Otero County grew by more than 4,000 people in the last decade according to local area 2020 U.S. Census data released Aug. 12.
According to the U.S. Census data, Otero County grew to 67,839 people with a population density of 10.3 people per square mile.
In 2010, Otero County had 63,797 people and 9.6 people per square mile.
The general demographics of Otero County show that 82.7 percent of the Otero County identified as white, 38.6 percent identify as Hispanic, 8.3 percent identify as Native American and 4.2 percent identify as Black, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The three main municipalities in Otero County grew in the last decade, records show.
In Alamogordo, the population grew from 30,402 poeple in the 2010 Census to 32,126 people.
In Cloudcroft, the population grew from 674 people in the 2010 Census to 704 in the 2020 Census.
In Tularosa, the population grew from 2,842 people in the 2010 Census to 3,040 in the 2020 Census.
There are 7,770 veterans in Otero County, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The median household income in Otero County is $41,988.
The U.S. Census indicates that the United States grew at its slowest rate since the 1930s.
New Mexico’s population also grew to 2,117,522 people, up from 2,059,179 in 2010.
The new U.S. Census data means that counties and states will be redistricting soon.
When a new Census is published, this means that elected office districts may shift based on population trends.
At the regular Otero County Commission meeting on Aug. 12, a professional services agreement with New Mexico Demographic Research, LLC for $22,000 for redistricting technical services was removed from the agenda.
The agreement was on the consent agenda where it would have been approved with minimal discussion.

The agreement will be discussed at the September Otero County Commission meeting due to questions the commission has about redistricting.
The U.S. Census’ full report on the 2020 survey was expected in September.
